After reading and loving Textbook Romance, picking up We Three Kings was an easy decision when I saw it available on Netgalley and this just cemented my love for Kristen Bailey’s books. I find her writing really funny and cheeky, even if you’re not from the UK or know much about their culture/humor.

I was laughing and admiring this book with every chapter I read. It was easy to read, heartwarming and super cozy. If you’re looking for a cute romance this holiday season, add this book to your TBR.

About

Maggie loves her job as head of IT at a financial firm with her three geeky but lovable work buddies. When they hear she plans to spend the holidays alone and invite her to stay with each of them, she can't resist the chance to get to know them better.

On the day before the holiday, her boss tells her she has to make one of her beloved team redundant, and Maggie is distraught. Frank's work is his world, Jasper's sarcastic humor is everything, and Leo, he's talented, professional, confusingly attractive, dependable, and funny... Maggie definitely doesn't want to lose him.

With her career and her heart on the line, Maggie sets off on the Christmas adventure of a lifetime, from playing fake girlfriend at a lavish wedding, to rescuing baby foxes on a posh country estate, to chasing a very confused donkey on Christmas Day in the Lake District. She can't ignore the sparks between her and Leo - but she also can't avoid her dilemma.

Can she find a way to keep her work family together, and maybe even find true love under the mistletoe?

Tropes/What to expect:

  • Found family

  • Single POV

  • Workplace romance

  • A hint of fake dating

Thoughts

The premise of this was really cute and something a little different than what I’ve read before, so it held my attention well. Coincidentally, I had just read I Hope This Finds You Well, which is another workplace romance of sorts. We love a theme.

I’ll be honest though, I thought the main character was going to consider dating all of three guys, considering the title. I’m glad it wasn’t that but I did love all of the characters regardless. I almost enjoyed the tale of all their friendships more than the main romance. The way they were all there for each other, knew each other’s secrets and the many ways they showed up to support each person was everything!

Maggie was adorable, quirky, and super nice. It was easy to understand why the guys thought of her as a friend as well as their boss. The way their relationships really bloomed as she got to know them more personally was so damn heartwarming, I began to feel a little attached to them. I think my favorite was Jasper because who he seemed to be vs. who he really was, well it was yet another reminder that you really don’t know what someone’s life is like and shouldn’t be quick to judge. I think Maggie and Jasper might end up being actual best friends if the story were to continue and I would love to read more about them!

I loved the way this was split up in different acts, too, each one their own adventure.

While I was able to guess what the ending would be, I enjoyed the journey nonetheless and still had a few things really surprise me along the way.

The one thing that might trip some people up is that she is technically into someone that reports to her at work. Had it been a guy who was the boss, that might not be as palatable.
